For nearly a decade, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities and partnering government/environmental agencies in the Clean Water Coalition have raised Water For People funds during Water Week – not just with the golf tournament, but by selling T-shirts and organizing other fun-filled charity fundraisers, big and small.
What began as a ‘water bucket relay’ foot race around the Franklin Water
Treatment Plant reservoirs in west Charlotte during the 1990’s has turned into
something much bigger. In May 2001, the reservoir bucket relay was transformed
into a canoe relay race at Latta Park. Dozens of teams participated, and
hundreds of people showed up to support and enjoy the event. City agencies and
private sector sponsors -- including engineering consultants, vendors and other
members of the community -- paid fees to enter the competition, and many groups
donated prizes and food for the event. When it was all over with last year, The
Clean Water Coalition wrote a check totaling more than $600 to Water For People.
